William Kelly William Kelly William KellyLove and happy marriage have often led people to accomplish unexpected things. William Kelly (1811 1888), a 19th-century American inventor, is one of them. His invention of the pneumatic process of steelmaking revolutionized the industry. It is a process in which air is blown through molten pig iron to oxidize and remove unwanted impurities. Also patented by Sir Henry Bessemer of Great Britain, this process produced the first inexpensive steel, which became the major construction material in the burgeoning industrial age. Kelly, who welches born in 1811 in Pittsburgh, PA, entered the dry goods business after studying metallurgy at the Western University in Pennsylvania. At this time, iron was sold in three forms, each distinguished by the amount of carbon present in the iron. Cast iron was highest in carbon content. Some cast iron was converted in forges to wrought iron, which contained no carbon. Intermediate was steel, which was the strongest form. Steel was made by slowly heating iron to high temperatures this was an expensive process and therefore little used. Beginning in 1847, Kelly made a series of experiments in an attempt to save on fuel costs in his furnace. He discovered that a blast of air would increase the temperature of the molten cast iron, since the carbon impurity acted as a fuel. Kelly hoped to save fuel by this process, and between 1851 and 1856, he built a series of experimental furnaces in the woods behind his plant. The work was done in secret because he was afraid that customers would not trust the metal made by the new process. Aware that air drafts cause molten iron to glow white hot, he became convinced that air blown through molten iron not only would remove the carbon but also would cause the temperature of the molten mass to rise, making further heating unnecessary. Those around Kelly thought his scheme insane, and his father-in-law even had him examined by a doctor. But the physicians knowledge of basic science enabled him to see the value of his patients scheme, and he became one of Kellys strongest supporters. About 1850, after several failures, Kelly succeeded in producing iron and steel with his process, although the quality of the steel was still largely a matter of chance. He did not patent the process immediately but continued working on it. In 1856 he learned that Henry Bessemer, working in England, had patented a similar process and that a patent was being applied for in the U.S. Even though Bessemer was trying to make steel (rather than to save fuel) and had proved his method a success (which Kelly had not), Kelly objected to Bessemers patent application and revealed his own experiments. In 1857, he was granted a patent for his process. Further innovations in steelmaking, notably by Robert Mushet of England and Goran Goransson of Sweden, made the pneumatic process practical. Before he went bankrupt during the panic of 1857, Kelly sold his patent to his father. In 1859, he renewed his experiments at the Cambria Iron Works in Johnstown, PA, and b y 1862 managed to find enough financial aid to enable him to build a steel plant in Wyandotte, MI. Within two years, he produced the first commercial steel, using the Kelly process. In 1863, the Kelly Pneumatic Process Company was organized, and the following year a rival company using Bessemers patents was organized in Troy, NY. Unable to achieve more than minimal success with their respective patents and processes, the two companies pooled their resources in 1866, and thereafter steel production expanded rapidly. Although he received some money from the Kelly Company, it was only after his patent was extended in 1871 that Kelly received significant remuneration for his invention. Though Kelly conducted one further experiment, his process was never successfully applied. In 1861, he merged with the firm that represented the Bessemer interests. The Kelly interests received three-tenths of the stock of the new firm, and the Bessemer people took seven-tenths. Kelly was not directly inv olved in unterstellung later commercial activities but lived in quiet retirement in Louisville, KY, until his death in 1888. Yet, some of my views differed, which led me to wander if this is because I am from the millennial generation (and we have different ways of thinking) or because our workforce has evolved so much that some of these first-job lessons simply dont apply today.Below are the final four lessons and my take on their relevancy to todays workforce5. Dress appropriately.While the art icle stressed that several Next Avenue readers said it was important to follow the dress code at work, I believe this lesson has changed with the times. Nowadays, workplaces dont have a strict dress code. Ive met many people who still go into an office and their work attire is jeans and a t-shirt. Appropriate dress in todays working environment depends on the culture of that organization.6. Work is what you make of it.The article says that first jobs are often the ones no one else wants. In my case of pushing carts in extreme heat and cold, this was true. And I think this lesson not only applies to first jobs, but to every position you have. Its like the saying, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. You can choose to make the most out of your job and have a positive attitude while working. You can also find ways to make it enjoyable (or not). A lot of it is up to you.7. Dont date the babo (or if you do, find another job).The article explains how one woman, who was a typist in a n ad agency, began dating the agencys president. And she believes people wont take you seriously if youre dating the boss.This lesson is timeless and applies to every generation. Work relationships can already be tricky, but once you add romance into the mix, 9 times out of 10 youre bound for disaster. Again, most people dont go into their first job (which is normally in their teenage years) thinking that this is what they love and will be doing the rest of their lives. People normally have the perspective that their first job is a temporary way to make money.Yet, as you continue to work and gain experience (especially after college) I believe then we grasp the concept that one should do what he or she loves because our experiences reinforce this notion.Not everyone learns the same things from their first jobs some people have similar takeaways while others are unique to their roles. Positive Self Talk and just being mindful of your thoughts, in general, will keep you in a better mood and mindset for any situation.On finding the focusOne of my favorite quotes my college coach used to always tell me was, If you focus on the things you cant control, it will adversely affect the t hings you can control. Its easy to get caught up in environmental stimuli, other peoples actions or behavior, but if you stay within yourself and stay in the moment youll have a much better chance at success. To get away from all the outside noise I like to find a quiet place or put my headphones in, and meditate or visualize my next tasks.On dealing with nervesHaving a process and staying in the moment is key to dealing with fear and nerves. So many people get caught up worrying about the past, or focusing on an outcome, that they become overwhelmed with whats going on currently. Fowler said the companys human resourc es representative told her that it was his first offense - a claim she later discovered was false after speaking with other female employees who said the same manager had also propositioned them.With no action taken against her manager, Fowler was given a choice either leave the team, or stay and possibly get a negative performance review from her manager, who was aware of her complaint.The blog post generated a range of responses from Silicon Valley and the tech community, nearly universally critical of Uber.Kalanick responded immediately on Twitter to Fowlers post, saying, Whats described here is abhorrent against everything we believe in. Anyone who behaves this way or thinks this is OK will be fired.Ive instructed our chief human resources officer Liane Hornsey to conduct an urgent investigation.
